James Madison University (JMU) is a public university founded in 1908. Initially established as a women’s college by an act of the Virginia General Assembly, the university was later renamed in 1976 in honor of James Madison, its fourth rector, who played a significant role in shaping the institution. Since the 2000s, JMU has expanded rapidly, becoming one of the largest universities in the country.
