Florida International University (FIU) is the second-largest university in Florida and seventh-largest in the U.S., with around 48,000 students.
Following a rapid population growth in South Florida after World War II, the Florida State Legislature approved the establishment of a new public university. FIU was officially founded in 1965. Upon its opening, 5,667 students enrolled, making it the largest initial enrollment in U.S. history at the time. The first graduates received their diplomas in 1972, and the university continues to experience steady annual growth.
