The
University of Westminster is a
public research university in the UK, offering high-quality higher education across 45 different specializations.
Westminster has a rich history, dating back to its foundation by Sir George Cayley in 1838 as the Polytechnic Institution, the first polytechnic university in the UK. Over the years, it gained a reputation as a hub for innovation and pioneering achievements:
- 1841 – Opened the first public photography studio in Europe.
- 1896 – Hosted the first UK screening of a film by the Lumière brothers.
- 1908 – Organized the first Olympic marathon in London.
- 1960–1970 – Launched the first degree programs in Photographic Science, Photography, and Media Studies.
During this period, the university focused on part-time and evening education, while also pioneering short professional courses for mid-career professionals. This strategy attracted over 20,000 students annually, cementing Westminster’s reputation as a forward-thinking institution.
Westminster was granted university status in 1992, gaining the right to award its own academic degrees and participate in government-funded research projects.
Today, the university has around 22,000 students and operates across four main campuses:
- Cavendish
- Harrow
- Marylebone
- Regent
Three of these campuses are located in central London, while Harrow is situated in northwest London.
The university not only offers academic excellence but also encourages students to explore their interests outside of studies, whether through sports, arts, or social activities. The Westminster Students’ Union plays a crucial role in organizing various events, clubs, and societies, including sports, entertainment, social initiatives, volunteering, and charity campaigns.
Due to its growing international impact, Westminster received The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2000 and again in 2005 for its achievements in entrepreneurship.
The University of Westminster Housing Service provides free assistance to students in finding accommodation. The university offers three comfortable and affordable residences, all featuring single rooms with en-suite facilities and well-equipped kitchens.
Accommodation cost: from £6,163 per year.
The housing service also helps students secure private apartments if needed.
