The
University of Southampton is a
public research university in the UK, located in Southampton. It is regarded as one of the top universities in the UK, demonstrated by its membership in the Russell Group. Today, Southampton has over 20,000 students, a remarkable growth from its initial 700 students in 1867.
The university was originally founded as Hartley Institution, which became Hartley College in 1896. Another name change followed in 1902, when it became
Hartley University College. Over the years, the university continued to develop and expand:
- 1919 – A new campus was established in the Highfield area
- 1935 – The first academic library (The Turner Sims Library) opened
- 1947 – The Faculty of Economics was founded
- 1952 – Awarded university status by Royal Charter, officially becoming the University of Southampton
- 1964 – Opening of the Nuffield Theatre
- 1967 – Construction of a new Student Union building
- 1995 – Establishment of the Southampton Oceanography Centre (now the National Oceanography Centre [NOCs])
- 2000 – Creation of the Faculty of Photonics
- 2011 – Opening of a new campus in Malaysia
- 2013 – Launch of the first Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)
