The
University of Nottingham traces its origins back to 1881, when the first public college in Nottingham was founded. Later, the college was granted 35 acres of land in Highfields by a benefactor, which became the site of the main University Park campus.
In 1948, the institution was awarded a Royal Charter and officially became
