The University of Aberdeen is one of Scotland’s oldest universities, providing world-class education for nearly six centuries to students from the UK and around the world.
The university was founded by William Elphinstone, Bishop of Aberdeen and Lord Chancellor of Scotland. In 1495, he established King’s College with the mission of educating doctors, teachers, clerks, lawyers, and civil servants to serve the Scottish Crown.
In 1593, a second post-Reformation university was founded by George Keith, 4th Earl Marischal.
In 1860, King’s College and Marischal College merged to form the modern
University of Aberdeen. Initially Arts and Theology were taught at King’s College and Law, Medicine, and Natural Sciences were taught at Marischal College.
A milestone in the university’s history came in 1892, when women were admitted to all faculties.
