Although Brunel officially became a university in 1966, its history dates back much further. The university traces its origins to a school founded by Joseph Lancaster in 1798 on Borough Road, which later became Borough Road College in 1817. This institution was formed from the consolidation of Borough Road College, Chiswick Polytechnic, and Maria Grey College.
