Brunel University is a
British public research university that has gained global recognition for its high-quality education and research achievements over the past 50 years.
Although Brunel officially became a university in 1966, its history dates back much further. The university traces its origins to a school founded by Joseph Lancaster in 1798 on Borough Road, which later became Borough Road College in 1817. This college played a key role in the establishment of several new educational institutions, including Acton Technical College in 1910.
Following its reorganization, Brunel College of Technology was founded, named after one of the greatest engineers, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. In July 1966, the Royal Charter granted Brunel College university status, officially naming it Brunel University.
In 1997,
Brunel University College (formerly West London Institute) merged with the university. This institution was formed from the consolidation of Borough Road College, Chiswick Polytechnic, and Maria Grey College. Since then, Brunel University has continued to grow, expand its facilities, and innovate its academic programs.
Key developments include:
- 2004 – New Athletics Centre (£6 million)
- 2005 – Indoor Athletics and Netball Centre (£7 million)
- 2007 – Opening of the Runnymede Campus
- 2014 – Brunel University becomes part of the University of London
