The university’s roots date back to 1843 with the founding of Birmingham College of Art. In 1971, it merged with four other Birmingham institutions:
  • Birmingham School of Music (1859),
  • Birmingham College of Commerce (1955),
  • South Birmingham Technical College (1961),
  • North Birmingham Technical College (1966)
The newly formed institution became The City of Birmingham Polytechnic. In March 1992, it was granted university status and renamed University of Central England in Birmingham, before adopting its current name, Birmingham City University, in 2007.
